Industrial demolition of exhausted mines and quarries in Ukraine is carried out using three principal methods:

  • Wet liquidation — complete flooding of the mine (also known as “wet” closure or mothballing);
  • Combined method — a variant of the first approach where the mine is only partially flooded;
  • Dry liquidation — full dismantling of all mining equipment and surface structures, followed by decommissioning of the facility.

Of these approaches, the dry liquidation method is the most technically intensive, requiring specialist equipment and expertise.

Dry Liquidation: Process and Variants

Dry mine demolition requires significant capital and operational expenditure. It involves dismantling all previously installed utilities and demolishing all temporary structures. Additionally, support structure elements must be removed and all surface mining infrastructure liquidated.

Dry liquidation can be implemented using two distinct approaches. The first provides for complete physical liquidation in three stages:

  • Isolation of underground mining workings using concrete blocking partitions;
  • Disconnection of all utilities connected to the facility (electricity, water supply, ventilation systems);
  • Dismantling of all mining equipment — both underground and surface installations.

The second approach differs fundamentally in that an initial “standby mode” is introduced — a period required to complete works at adjacent mines. This mode ensures safety at neighbouring facilities and continues until surface structures in the zone of influence of the already-worked mines are fully demolished. All works are carried out in accordance with a technical project prepared by the relevant departments and approved by the chief engineer, with a mandatory feasibility study as a prerequisite.
