Frequently asked questions
Structure demolition is the controlled dismantling or demolition of a building, structure, or part thereof in order to clear the site for new construction, reconstruction, or material recycling. The term covers a wide range of works: from dismantling individual floor slabs and walls to complete demolition of large industrial complexes.
Depending on the facility and site conditions, different methods are applied:
- Mechanical demolition — demolition using excavators with a hydraulic hammer or crusher; the most common and effective method for most facilities;
- Element-by-element dismantling — manual or mechanized dismantling with maximum preservation of materials (brick, metal structures);
- Controlled collapse — demolition with directed fall of the structure in a defined direction; applied when space around the facility is limited.
Building demolition is ordered in the following cases:
- The building is physically or functionally obsolete and not subject to reconstruction;
- The facility is damaged by fire, accident, or military action — and restoration is economically impractical;
- The site needs to be cleared for new construction or redevelopment;
- There is a decision to demolish an unauthorized structure or emergency building.
Before demolishing a building, the following are mandatory: disconnection of all utilities (gas, electricity, water supply), development of a work execution plan (WEP), site fencing, and notification of residents of adjacent buildings.
Industrial structures — plants, warehouses, elevators, production buildings — require a special approach:
- Massive reinforced concrete structures — powerful hydraulic hammers and jaw crushers are required;
- Large volumes of waste — organization of continuous dump truck removal;
- Complex site geometry — work between operating buildings or underground utilities;
- Material sorting — separate removal of scrap metal, concrete rubble, wood for further processing.
Tereshchenko Group of Companies has completed demolition of hundreds of industrial facilities throughout Ukraine — from small production premises to large factory complexes.
- Type of structure — brick, reinforced concrete, metal structures have different demolition labour intensity;
- Volume of the structure — total cubic footage and area of the facility;
- Site conditions — availability of free space for equipment maneuvering;
- Need for waste removal — number of dump truck trips and distance to the landfill;
- Urgency — accelerating works may require additional equipment;
- Presence of hazardous materials — asbestos or chemical contamination requires special disposal.
The exact cost can only be calculated after a specialist’s site visit and inspection.
